Amati Violins

During the Italian Renaissance lived a man named Andreas Amati from the town of Cremona from Italy. In fact, it was Andreas Amati who founded the Cremonese School and put Cremona on the map, as the leading violin making capital of their time. Andreas Amati started out in the fifteen hundreds and gained popularity and acclaim because he was commissioned by the king of France, King Charles IX, to make instruments for his court. Amati’s violins stood out because they were aesthetically pleasing and followed great geometric principles. Andreas Amati had two sons named Antonio and Girolamo. They were following the footsteps of their father Andreas and went into the violin making business as well. They were also quite popular and they were able to perfect the shape of the violins’ f-holes.

The grandson of Andreas Amati, named Nicolaus Amati, was also a gifted violin maker, and his popularity even exceeded that of his grandfathers. He was responsible for creating the famous “Grand Amati”, a violin which inspired other great violin makers, such as Antonio Stradivari, to follow the Amati style. Trademarks of the Grand Amati violin are its size, which was quite large, its longer corners, huge scrolls and elegant varnish. The arches of the violins were also quite high. What was lacking however in these violins, were the wonderful sound quality that was later on developed by other great luthiers from the Cremonese School. Girolamo Amati is the son of Nicolaus Amati, and was able to improve on some of the aspects of his father’s work.

Another “graduate” of the Cremonese School is Antonio Stradivari. Stradivari is one of the most popular violin makers and is said to be the best that has ever lived. He was trained by Nicolaus Amati himself. Stradivari was a perfectionist in his craft, and did not have to ever worry about making money as he was very rich on his own. When Stradivari started out, he was greatly inspired by the Grand Amati in style and construction. He modified it slightly though to make it look flatter in the arching. It was during the middle period of his career that he started to make his own style, where the violins had graceful f-holes, really flat arching, and his characteristic shiny varnish. Because his violins looked so slender and long, they were nick named Long Pattern violins. Other great violin makers who were inspired by Amati violins were Francesco Ruggieri, Jean Batiste Grancino, Andreas Guarnerius and Sanctus Seraphino.

There are many original Amati violins that still exist today and can be observed on display in some museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, or at the National Music Museum at the University of South Dakota. Their collections include the violins of Andreas, Girolamo and Nicolo Amati. There are some private collectors as well. Because of the value that is given to Amati violins, they sell for hundreds of thousand of dollars at auctions today.
