The antique Stradivari violins that are in existence today come from three different periods in which Stradivari did his work. The first being the Amatese Stradivari period, which was the time when his violins were similar to those of his mentor’s in the Amati school. However, he was able to improve on their violins and emphasized on the use of quality wood for his violins. The next period in the Stradivari series produced violins that were nicknamed Long Pattern violins. This was so because the violins were constructed into longer instruments, making them look more graceful and at the same time, slim, because of the narrow spaces in between the f-holes.
But Stradivari’s most priceless violins come from his third period, where the violins he made were able to produce a wonderfully rich sound. The body of the violin was nothing short of perfect. On these violins, was a translucent varnish that was so beautiful and made the instruments look like they were worth a million bucks, which incidentally, they are today. The finishing and exact construction of the third period Stradivari violins is still unknown today. Even if his antique violins are still in existence, it is impossible for anyone to completely copy his skill in violin making.
There are many other well-known violin makers from different European countries, whose instruments are worth collecting as well. Some of them are Nicholas Lupot antique violins, Allessandro Gagliano violins and Francesco Ruggieri violins. These violins will cost you an arm and a leg, especially if they are rare pieces of work. That is why it is of utmost importance to have these violins authenticated and once you do, proper care and preservation must be observed.
