Gut is not favored so much today because of its impracticality. These strings are highly sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, causing them to break easily. They are certainly not the right choice for beginners and young students. They are reserved for use with orchestra and professional violins, but they are only used as the core, with a metal or synthetic wrapping on their outer layer.
The bridge of the Baroque violins varied throughout this period. However, it can be noticed that they have a lower orientation and are wider in thickness. The necks of Baroque violins were not angled at a downward position like they are today. The Baroque violins had necks that were almost parallel to the violins’ tables, depending on the maker of the violin. They were also very thick.
You will also notice fingerboards that look like wedges, and that are much shorter as well. The bass bars in Baroque violins are smaller too, and did not have fine tuners yet. And now, the lengths of the modern violins are standardized. They are uniform in length measurement regardless of who manufactured it. Even with the variation of sizes like the 1/8, ¼, ½ and so on, there is a set measurement that the manufacturers follow. Baroque violins had varying lengths depending upon the desires of the luthier.
Baroque violins do not have chin and shoulder rests too, as these features came later on into the evolution of the violin. Thus, the way the violin was played during the Baroque period was different as well, where the violins played usually in front of the violinist as opposed to how they are mostly played to the side today.
The bows that were used during the Baroque period differed as well. The Baroque bows were either straight or were made to bend at an outward angle. Meanwhile, today’s bows curve inward. Baroque bows are also slimmer as it goes down the tip. These bows were also shorter and lighter in weight than our bows today.
When taken together, these features make up a typical Baroque violin, which can easily be recreated today by a reputable luthier. However, most music experts warn us that being able to have a Baroque violin, whether authentic or a reproduction does not mean that the violinist will be able to replicate the kind of music that was played during the Baroque period.
The reason for this is that the violinists during the Baroque period were trained in schools that specialized in intensive training of this precise form of music. To achieve a truly authentic Baroque performance, the violinist must really immerse himself into long hours of this kind of training.
