The Palatino brand of musical instruments is inspired by Italian style and tradition. The Italian craftsmen are renowned for their well made instruments, especially violins. It is for this reason that this company chose this name, which is actually the name of a hill in Rome, where the ancient seat of power once stood. Infusing traditional methods and precision with modern innovation, Palatino was able to make it to the top of the student violin market, since they started in 1994. Among Palatino’s great creations is their hand-carved Palatino Mancini Violin or VN-1400. The process of making the Palatino Mancini Violin stays true to the Italian tradition it was based on.
This violin is made from solid, hand-carved wood, after which it is hand-rubbed with polish from France to give it an elegant finish. The wood by the way is made from spruce that is imported from Europe. The sides and back of the violin are made from flamed aged maple. The ebony fittings are hill style and have an Aubert bridge. The strings are by Pirastro Evah Pirazzi, a well known German brand.
The Palatino Mancini Violin is patterned after the Stradivarius violins of the 17th Century. The reconstruction of these violins was well executed by the workshop of Wei Jing Zhong. This studio has a select group of craftsmen who reproduce Italian violins the same way that they were made in the sixteen hundreds.
The Palatino Mancini Violin is available in the full 4/4 size and is sold for a pretty reasonable price considering that it is hand crafted and well made. The sound quality of this violin is really amazing too as it gives off a deep sound, which is favored by many of the intermediate violin players.
Another model from Palatino is the Maggini Style Violin or the VN 1500. This violin also has a solid spruce top that tightly grained. The sides and back of the violin are made from solid carved maple mood. The body of this violin is wider, making the projection better than other violins.
The ebony fittings are hill-style and grade-A. The ebony tailpiece is grade-A as well and it comes with an E-tuner. The Palatino Maggini violin also features inlaid purfling and hand-rubbed oil varnishing for its finish. Like the Palatino Mancini, it also comes only in the 4/4 full size.
Meanwhile, the Palatino Anziano Outfit or the VN-950 and the Palatino Dolce Outfit or the VN0850 are models also worth considering. The Palatino Anziano Outfit features a spruce top that is tightly grained, while the sides and back are made from flamed maple wood. The neck and scroll are hand carved and made from maple wood as well. The ebony fittings are grade-A, and the bow and slide are made from Brazilwood. This set comes complete with a featherweight suspension case, making it easy to carry around.
The Palatino Dolce Outfit is also made from tightly grained spruce wood for its top, and its sides and back are made from maple wood. The fittings are made from ebony and it comes complete with a Brazilwood bow and a featherweight case.
