Ren Wei Shi Violins
The sixteenth century saw the inception of a string instrument which is known as the violin today. Making violins was and still is considered an art, especially in Europe where violin makers were exceptionally skilled craftsmen, who only produced a small number of instruments at a time. The violins that we see today are based on the violins made by the various violin makers of the past. Each maker belongs to a certain school of thought that governs the production process. Among the most popular schools is the Cremonese School. The Cremonese school was established by a man named Andreas Amati, who lived between 1525 and 1611. Nicolaus Amata, who was a descendant of Andreas was known for his Grand Amati violins, which were distinctively larger than most violins, and had longer corners. The scrolls on the Grand Amati violins were also bolder and the varnishing was also well made. They were also known for their brilliance in tone.
From the Cremonese School is Antonio Stradivari, who was a student of Nicolaus himself. The Stradivari name is one that is familiar to music experts and lay people alike because of his popularity. He is much revered and acknowledged as perhaps the best violin maker in history. Stradivari’s violins also went through their own evolution. His first models were much like his mentor’s Grand Amati’s. But he improved on this later on by making them bigger and to look more elegant. His violins had arches that were flatter and had beautiful f-holes. He also made what were known as Long Pattern violins, which looked longer and slimmer than most violins because of the narrow space between the f-holes.
At the peak of his career, Stradivarius created the violins that made him the popular man he is today. He made instruments that were perfect in both sound and aesthetics. No one could beat Stradivari in terms of making violins that had a deep and brilliant tone. His violins also have a beautiful translucent varnish, which made his violins in high demand.
Stradivari was very active in his career that spanned over sixty years. He was said to have made more than one thousand violins himself. His original violins fetch thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars at auctions today. Violin makers today model their violins after the Stradivari violins, and it can be said that his style is the most emulated.
Among the better Stradivari type violins available today are those made by violin maker Ren Wei Shi.
