Violin strings consist of a core and wrapping. The most popular strings being used today for the core are of four kinds. These are either rope, solid steel, synthetic or gut. Meanwhile, the wrappings are aluminum, nylon, chrome, tinned steel, nickel silver or even gold. So how do you know which kind of strings to use? This will all depend on the kind of sound you would like to achieve.
The first type of core strings are the rope strings. They can also be described as spiral or cable strings in their product descriptions. Here, the core is made from very thin strips of wire that are twisted to form a cable. These strings are then wrapped in nickel-silver, tungsten, silver or chrome steel materials. These strings are able to fuse the great sound quality of gut strings, but with the practicality of steel core strings.
Meanwhile, most violins that are on the market today use steel core strings. They have proven to be the most budget friendly and most resistant to daily wear and tear. The sound quality is described as bright. Steel core strings are often wrapped in chrome, stainless steel, nickel, silver or aluminum.
Steel core strings are preferred by most violin manufacturers again, because they cost less that other types of cores. Meanwhile, students and instructors alike also like steel core strings because they do not require a lengthy break in period. Also, they are the most practical because the sound quality steel core strings do not deteriorate despite the fact that the violin is being played in a completely different climate or temperature. These strings also withstand humid conditions.
Strings made from synthetic cores are usually made from nylon. Other names for synthetic strings are PET synthetic, perlon synlon and nylon core. Just like gut strings, synthetic violin strings are also subtle and warm in sound. However, because synthetic strings are not affected by wear and tear or changes in temperature or humidity, they are more practical than gut strings. Synthetic strings are usually wrapped in aluminum, silver plate, nickel silver or silver.
But the original material that was used for violin strings were gut. Famous violin makers like Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri used sheep gut for their violin stings. This is the string of choice for professional violinists and those who play for orchestras. But because of gut strings’ sensitivity to temperature and humidity, they are often considered impractical by amateurs and student violinists. But those seriously into playing the violin like gut strings especially if they want to produce the correct kind of sound needed to play classical and Baroque compositions.
